301: Optimizing Nutrition and Health in the Era of Obesity Medications: A Technological and Innovation Perspective
Information
Introduction
The emergence of highly effective anti-obesity medications (AOMs) has presented a unique opportunity for food and technology industries to collaborate and ensure individuals maintain optimal nutrition while on these treatments. Current pharmacotherapies, including GLP1 modulators, affect appetite and eating behaviors through various mechanisms, targeting different aspects of food intake regulation. However, more research is needed to personalize treatment based on individual eating patterns while ensuring optimal nutrition is achieved.
Methods
As a panelist I will discuss how AOMs, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists, influence appetite, satiety, and food preferences, including clinical observations on the potential nutritional side effects of AOMs, including gastrointestinal issues and nutrient deficiencies. This will enable attendees a foundation from which to understand and explore the convergence of technology and food science to deliver innovative products and formulations that meet the growing nutritional needs for this unique population.
Results
Technology approaches, tools, and delivery systems key to addressing individual needs, genetic factors, and metabolic profiles will be highlighted. Opportunities include wearables, digital platforms (GenAI, etc.), customized nutrition and tailored dietary recommendations to innovative food technologies, such as 3D food printing and personalized nutrition apps, to provide nutrient-dense, customized meals for individuals on AOMs. The role of probiotics and prebiotics in modulating gut microbiota and improving metabolic health alongside nano-technologies will also be touched upon.
Significance
By fostering collaboration between healthcare providers, nutritionists, food scientists, and technology experts, we can develop comprehensive strategies to optimize the nutritional health of individuals on AOMs. This presentation will inspire discussion and innovation to address the evolving needs of this growing population.
